Pharmaceutical projects increase in significance for construction



Heavy investments in to the pharmaceutical industry have increased in significance for construction as many main contractors set up pharma divisions to handle the demand. 


Pharmaceutical's new flagship development, Astrazeneca's research & development biomedical campus HQ in Cambridge has had £600million worth of investments. The main contractor on the project is Mace and it's set for completion by the end of 2021. 

Plans have also been submitted for the construction of a £46.6million research & development enabling building alongside the main campus project. Work on the new Cambridge centre is due to begin next summer and continue for 18 months. 


Elsewhere in the UK, Quay Pharmaceuticals in North Wales has released detailed plans for a  £4.9million research centre. The 1,960 sq m project is managed by Hughes Architectural and has plans to begin late summer 2020, continuing for 8 months.  


Although there is a pipeline of major and medium scale projects within the industry- smaller companies are also working on building pharmaceutical projects. a £2.3million capacity expansion has begun in Nottingham for Albumedix with additional plant and machinery.

 

It is clear that the Pharmaceutical industry is set to bring on major projects throughout years to come with an increase in demand for research & development within this sector. The construction industry will continue to benefit from such plans with opportunities arising for skilled candidates.
